New words for our (brave) world

Well with the release of a new edition of the Chambers Dictionary, its time to share my thoughts on a selection of the most notable new additions (Shakespeare would have loved them):

  1. ARM CANDY - Someone who is invited as a partner to a social event more to add to the glamour of the occasion than for his or her sparkling conversational skills.
  2. BINGO WING - A flap of loose skin that hangs down from the upper arm (so called because it is often displayed by people raising a hand to claim victory in bingo).
  3. HAPPY SLAPPING - The practice of physically attacking an unsuspecting victim while an accomplice records the incident on a camera equipped mobile phone.
  4. MUFFIN TOP - A word coined by Australian comidiennes Kath and Kim, meaning when a woman wears a pair of tight jeans that makes her flab spill out over the waistband, just like the top of a muffin sits over the edge of the paper case.
  5. MUNTER - An unattractive person, especially a woman.
  6. SALAD DODGER - A person with an unhealthy diet.
  7. TITAPE - Double-sided adhesive tape used to secure the position of the breasts so that a revealing outfit does not reveal everything.

The list leaves me speechless, I admit I have selected some of the more extreme additions, but even so, are we only ever going to add slang to our vocabulary from now till the end of time?

BBC promotes healthy grocery shopping

One an all learn to make more healthy shopping choices with the BBC's shopping list generator. Here is how it works:
  1. You check off items that you normally would buy at the supermarket.
  2. Click on "build my shopping list."
  3. Suggestions are provided by the generator for more healthy items to buy, along with corresponding background information.

Not a startling success as I was prompted to swap tomatoes for tomatoes and fresh fruit juices should be swapped for, .... yes you guessed it, .... fresh fruit juices. Still some of the suggestions are reasonable. Worth a try.

How do seedless grapes grow if they are seedless?

The majority of grapevines in production today produce seedless grapes (due to popularity), most fruits today do not come from seeds they come from cuttings instead. A piece of another vine or branch is cut off, dipped in rooting hormone and then planted in moist compost so that roots form and a new vine is formed. Because the new grapevine has come from cuttings, they are essentially clones of the original vine they were cut from. It should be noted that seedless grapes actually do contain seeds later in their life, but a genetic error prevents the seeds from forming hard outer coats like normal seeds do.

A new Idol

The beginning of another week, what can I say..... well probably quite a bit, so grab a drink and sit comfortably. I watched Tiger Woods complete another impressive Majors win last night over in the US at the ‘US PGA’, after last month collecting ‘The Open’ championship over here. That man is probably the best idol anyone could have or seek to follow. His impressive dedication to method and focus is second to none. Now all that hard work is clearly visible and I feel is not brought to the public’s attention often enough. He's changed the sport, which was once elitist and narrow minded to cater for everyone. That said I intend to try to follow his ways, so let me nail my colours to the mast here!

The BBQs over the weekend were a load of fun and had plenty of good food and fun conversations. Cheers to one and all again and I look forward to the coming long weekend, thank goodness for bank holidays!

Another tough week draws to a close with the best night of all, Friday! It's the US PGA, start of the Premiership, final test again Pakistan, it's certainly going to be a busy weekend. Hopefully the weather will hold as BBQs are set for this weekend. Have a good weekend everyone!
